I don’t like scripted math or textbooks or worksheets (although I do recognize their usefulness). Teachers too often depend on what “was done in the past” to direct their instruction. Or they teach in much the same way they themselves were taught. I have done that as well, figuring, that is how I learned so that is how my students will learn.
But I had to realize that my students are not like me, primarily because they do not have the same love and appreciation for math that I do. And that is okay. It just means I have to find ways to help them love and appreciate it.
Every math class has to have an element of fun … a card game or a puzzle or an adventure. Anything that makes it memorable. My goal is for students to groan with disappointment when the bell rings!
